Your crew may not like it because it can be sticky, but it's a really important tool." As if worries about drought, flooding, and tor- nados weren't enough, O'Brien says that fire risk and emerald ash borer (Agrilus planiplennis) are upcoming threats to Columbia and envi- rons. He and his wife Carrie homestead just 15 minutes from Columbia, so their concerns for Columbia are true for their own land. On a lighter note, however, O'Brien is heartened by community-driven organizations like Forest Releaf of Missouri, Beyond Housing in St. Louis, Treesilience in St. Louis and Chicago, and Bridging the Gap in Kansas City that are integrating community for- estry into a more holistic approach to community development that can include affordable, safe, and accessible housing; small business assistance; addressing employment, transportation, and child care needs and barriers; and more. "These programs are driven by the people who live in the commu- nity," O'Brien says. "I think this is the right and best approach for the future of community forestry." Along these lines, he highly recommends this article by community forester Ann Koenig in Missouri Conservationist, "Human Habitat: Community Conservation Puts Nature's Focus on People." ucfsociety.org 39
