Filling the Professional Gap in Urban Forestry: The UBC Master of Urban Forestry Leadership (MUFL) Program Contributors: Michelle Sutton, Sara Barron, Jillian van der Geest, Elisa Kwun You're a recent college graduate who studied arboriculture, environmental science, forestry—or some- thing in that vein. You've been intrigued by urban forestry but have yet to work in the field. How do you get your foot in the door? Or perhaps you're an established arborist and/or urban forester but need more training and cre- dentials to advance. What's your next move? The University of British Columbia (UBC) Forestry Faculty devel- oped MUFL (Master of Urban Forestry Leadership), a 25-month, online, part-time program that meaningfully connects its cohorts to knowledge, mentors, stimulating travel experiences, and to one another. The program is designed to provide an interdisciplinary perspective of urban forestry, with a focus on strategic manage- ment, decision-making, and creativity. Courses provide a diversity of perspectives to help create well-rounded urban foresters. Affectionately pronounced "Muffle," the program has culmi- nated in a trip to Germany, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, and/or the Netherlands to view urban forestry and green infrastruc- ture innovations at their award-winning, highest level. (Other parts of the world are under consideration—stay tuned!) Applications for the next class of MUFL students are due February 15, 2025 for the program starting in July 2025.
