Much of the conversation with my mentor Jim [Barborinas] was organic and unstructured. As we got to know each other, some topics would emerge naturally; I specifically valued a conversation around the impact that urban foresters have on the stewardship of the population of trees under their control. Before we started the mentorship, I had hoped to one day become a city forester. After talking with Jim, it became clear that as a city forester I wouldn't be able to provide the level of care for trees that I would like to. I'm now looking at other options, with different funding structures and goals, such as university campus forestry or similar. The mentorship program has provided insights and I would recommend it others. I would also participate again! —Peter Murray (mentee) Environmental Specialist and Urban Forestry Planner, Davey Resource Group I find it hard sometimes to be objective about urban forestry because I am so passionate about it. I find Peter [Murray] to be equally passionate and impressed that he would decide to change his career to pursue something [UCF] that would give him even greater satisfaction. He will be great for our industry! I appreciate the opportunity to participate in the UCFS Mentoring Program. —Jim Barborinas (mentor) Principal Consultant-Local Manager, Urban Forestry Services, Bartlett Consulting ucfsociety.org 39
