Hansen says his favorite field day stop was when the group of 40 looked at a proposed dog park site, one that would impact existing trees. "This was fun and interesting to see arborists, engineers, and landscape architects working together in the development stage looking at the site from every pos- sible angle. Seeing real-time collaboration with so many experts was exciting. I haven't been a big-city person, but I could see someday working for one in order to be in that kind of dynamic work environ- ment. The whole trip left me thinking deeply about what I want to do with my life going forward." Hansen presented to Portland Urban Forestry staff about how things are done in Wilmette and what he's learned. In Wilmette, per its Tree Protection Ordinance, the City takes care of street trees—referred to as parkway trees there—while in Portland, homeowners are responsible for those trees. They need a permit to take down a tree, even if it's dead or hazardous, >> Portland Urban Forestry Permitting and Regulation Team gathered on Field Day 2024. A magnet that was part of a public awareness campaign for Portland's revised Tree Code that launched in 2015. ucfsociety.org 21
