36 tobaccoasia Issue 1, 2026 January / February By Thomas Schmid In many places, the premium hand-rolled cigar landscape is still ruled by established giants. But, a new wave of boutique brands is steadily building momentum and international recognition. From the Dominican Republic to the United States, from Zim- babwe to the United Arab Emirates, these companies are join- ing a growing sea of peers, creating breakers that surge higher and higher, slowly chipping away at the once indestructible rock that are mainstream brands. After all, in their indefatigable en- deavors, these niche brands are skillfully blending tradition with modern ambition, offering distinctive products and philosophies that make them unique in their very own ways. Rising Flames: Niche Premium Cigar Brands Making Their Mark Five boutique cigar houses are carving out their place in the global premium market with heritage, innovation, and bold identities. Montoliu Cigars Dominican Heritage Meets Modern Precision Founded in 2024 in Tamboril, Dominican Republic, Montoliu Internacional Cigars SRL is led by c.e.o. and founder Samuel David Fernández Collado. Business development manager Jose Luis Alcantara explained that Montoliu was "born as a living tribute to our ancestors, who turned tobacco into a passion and the craft of making it into a legacy." The brand positions itself as a luxury house with tech‑ nical excellence. Alcantara stressed that "all of our cigars are fully handmade and crafted exclusively with tobaccos that have undergone a natural fermentation and aging process of no less than five years." This ensures consistency and aromatic depth across production runs. Montoliu markets domestically and internationally, with Moldova, Romania, Spain, Russia, and Asia as key export mar‑ kets. Shipments and cigar lounge openings are part of its expan‑ sion strategy. "Our production structure enables us to efficiently meet the needs of importers and distributors seeking a reliable, consistent manufacturing partner," Alcantara noted. Based in Dubai, Amarati Cigars merges the region's luxury sensibilities with Central American craftsmanship, though its cigars are meticulously manufac- tured in Nicaragua. The brand's debut lines, such as Sol Azul—inspired by the Côte d'Azur—and Letter to a Father, reflect a philosophy of sto- rytelling through tobacco, with blends designed to evoke personal and cultural narratives. By sourcing premium Nicaraguan tobaccos and presenting them within a distinctly Emirati identity, Amarati Cigars posi- tions itself as both a regional pioneer and a global contender, bridging tradition and modern luxury in the evolving Middle Eastern cigar market.
