These effects occur because nicotine influences several neurotransmitter systems simultaneously. Dopamine boosts motivation and reward processing, norepinephrine enhances vigilance, serotonin helps regulate mood and cognitive flexibil- ity, and glutamate stimulates neural activity. Together, those mechanisms help explain why nicotine has long attracted interest as a cognitive enhancer. Therapeutic possibilities Beyond everyday productivity, nicotine has also drawn attention for its potential therapeutic applications. Scientists have explored its effects in neurological and psy- chiatric conditions including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia and attention deficit disorders. Research suggests nicotine may improve cognitive symptoms in some of these conditions by modulating neural signaling pathways re- lated to memory and learning. In Parkinson's disease models, for example, nicotine appears to protect dopamine-producing neurons and reduce neurotoxicity — mechanisms that could slow neurological degeneration. Clinical research remains ongoing, and the therapeutic po- tential of nicotine remains under investigation. But the growing body of evidence reinforces an important distinction: nicotine's biological activity extends far beyond addiction. The rise of nicotine in wellness culture Outside laboratories, the compound has begun to attract atten- tion from a very different audience — the wellness industry. Studies show that nicotine can improve attention, memory formation, and learning processes. Credit: Oladimeji Ajegbile, Pexels.
