62 tobaccoasia Issue 3, 2026 May / June By Thomas Schmid The global tobacco trade is a complex ecosystem shaped by decades of cultivation, commerce, and cultural consumption. Yet, even in such a mature industry, new players continue to emerge with fresh approaches, innovative systems, and bold visions. Good examples for these dynamics are the three independent companies that we are introducing in this article. They are all carving out distinct identities in the leaf supply chain, each of them representing a different phi- losophy of acquisition, contracting, and service provision. But they all share a common ambition: to redefine reliability and trust in interna- tional tobacco markets. Desert Wide India Private Limited Founded in January 2025, Desert Wide India Private Limited entered the industry with a clear conviction. "The Indian tobacco trade needs structural change, not another run-of-the-mill trader," asserted Akin- chan Jain, the company's founder and managing director during his interview with Tobacco Asia. "We are not trying to participate in the ex- isting system. We are trying to upgrade it." Accordingly, the company deliberately positions itself between India's large, vertically integrated giants and the fragmented ecosystem of small traders, aiming to pro- fessionalize the middle ground.
