Studies suggest that Nepalese high-grown teas have lower caf- feine content and higher levels of linalo- ol, a compound that contributes to their distinctive aroma and flavor. Preliminary laboratory tests indicate that the antioxi- dant content in Nepali tea is higher. Using Regenerative Farming to Enhance Nepali Tea Another model is the Regen Tea program initiated by Annabel Kalmar, founder of Tea Rebellion. Based in the UK, Tea Re- bellion challenges the traditional tea trade by directly connecting tea drinkers with farmers, bypassing intermediaries. In an interview with STiR Coffee and Tea, An- nabel Kalmar discusses her relationship with Nepali farmers and the goals of the Regen Tea program. "I have been working with Nepali tea farmers for the last eight years," says Kal- mar. "Small, unique buyers purchase Ne- pali tea." Regen Tea aims to help farmers adopt regenerative tea farming practices and ensure they receive an ROI. The program is now working with pilot farms in several tea regions around the world to help them transition to regenerative methods and document the process. Three Nepali tea farmer cooperatives, Ilam Tea Cooperative, Siddhadevi Tea Es- tate, and Nepal Tea Collective, have expressed interest in participating in the Regen Tea pilot. "All of these cooperatives are comprised of multiple smallholder tea growers who are at different stages of adopting regenerative agricultural practices on their farms," explained Kalmar. "We are working towards agronomic and resilience benefits."
