Tobacco Asia 37 www.nicotineusp.com sales@nicotineusp.com NICOTINE IN ITS PUREST FORM The company's machines are designed to handle a broad spectrum of products, including cigarettes, heated tobacco products (HTP), e-cigarettes, e-liquids, and nicotine pouches. In markets like Italy, where regulation is stringent, such flexibility is essential. Automatika's systems are not only compliant but also tailored to meet the specific requirements of licensed tobacco- nists and authorized vape retailers. Importantly, the in-house developed software is integrat- ed with the machines' telemetry. "This way we can manage the machines remotely with a level of integration never achieved be- fore," said Pellegrino. "We can even monitor the various com- ponents, anticipating critical issues and potential breakdowns before the machine goes down, thus ensuring 24/7 service." Extending retail beyond opening hours One of the defining contributions of modern vending machines in Italy has been their role in extending legal retail availability. Historically, limited shop opening hours created gaps in access, particularly during evenings and holidays. These gaps inadver- tently fueled illicit trade. "The introduction of regulated vending machines significantly changed this dynamic," Pellegrino noted. "By enabling 24/7 access to tobacco products at official prices, vending machines made the legal channel more accessible and competitive." But rather than replacing traditional tobacconists, Automatika's machines effectively function as an extension of their business. Installed either inside shops or just outside en- trances within a defined radius subject to regulatory approval, they ensure continuity of service while maintaining strict com- pliance with national laws. Compliance as a core design principle Operating in a highly regulated environment requires more than just robust hardware. It demands a holistic approach to compli- ance. Automatika's machines are deeply integrated into the legal and fiscal frameworks governing tobacco sales. "Modern vend- ing machines operate within a controlled ecosystem," Pellegrino asserted. "They are directly linked to licensed retailers and are aligned with regulated pricing, ensuring full transparency." Key compliance features include product traceability, secure transac- tions, and integration with fiscal systems where required. This level of oversight not only strengthens the legal supply chain but also minimizes opportunities for unauthorized sales. Age verification: the technological cornerstone Perhaps one of the most critical aspects of vending machine innovation in the tobacco sector is age verification. Automa- tika has developed a proprietary system capable of reading and validating official identification documents in real time. "Our system verifies the user's age instantly using optical and NFC technologies," said Pellegrino. "It supports electronic ID cards and ICAO-standard documents, ensuring both speed and reli- ability." The system can read a variety of documents, including identity cards, health cards, and residence permits. Importantly, it achieves this without storing sensitive personal data, ensuring compliance with the European Union's General Data Protec- tion Regulation (GDPR) and other privacy regulations. Some machines also offer optional biometric recognition for regis- tered users, streamlining repeat purchases while maintaining legal safeguards.
