Not every sheriff's office has the budget to keep pace with the cost of modern protective equipment. A single bulletproof vest for a deputy or K-9 can cost anywhere from $850 to $1,200. For fiscally constrained counties already stretched thin across competing priorities, equipping every officer on the force can be a genuine challenge. That is where the Florida Sheri s Association steps in. FSA's Bulletproof Vest Grant Program provides vests and ballistic panels to deputies, SWAT members, correctional officers, and K-9s serving in financially constrained sheriffs' offices across Florida. The pro- gram reflects a core principle of the association: that the level of protection a deputy receives should not be determined by the size of the county budget.
The numbers reflect that commitment. In fiscal year 2025-2026, FSA disbursed more than $150,000 through the program, helping provide 186 vests and 70 panels to 16 sheriffs office deputies and K-9s across the state. Behind every one of those numbers is an officer who went home at the end of a shift.
