40 tobaccoasia Issue 6, 2026 November / December By Thomas Schmid Premium cigars have long been associated with robust flavors, strong tobacco, and estab- lished traditions. Yet the category is also evolving, with manufacturers exploring blends that offer a gentler introduction to cigar smoking without sacrificing complexity or crafts- manship. These products may appeal to consumers who have previously found tradi- tional cigars too powerful, including women and younger adult consumers entering the premium segment. Anthony Azar, founder and managing director of the International Cigar Somme- lier Institute (ICSI) in Switzerland, describes the movement toward more approachable blends as an emerging trend that helps consumers, rather than an established transforma- tion. For him, the important development is not simply a reduction in strength. It is a more considered approach to blending, in which manufacturers seek to create a distinc- tive and satisfying experience for a broader range of adult consumers. The opportunity lies in challenging the often-heard assumption that a premium cigar must be strong to be sophisticated. A balanced cigar can deliver layers of flavor, an appealing aroma, and a rewarding smoking experience without overwhelming the palate. Such a proposition could encourage more consumers to explore the category, Azar said.
