Web Mapping All these elements allow anglers to filter their selections and only view the access areas that provide the type of fishing experience they're looking for. After an access area has been identified, users can click on the location and access Google driving directions to the site. For rural sites where computer-generated driving directions aren't enough, Commission biologists entered additional details to help anglers locate sites. The map also provides a point-to-point driving-direction tool, so trout fisherman can get directions to designated trout waters that may not have a designated fishing area site associated with them. Where to Hunt Like the need to generate interactive fishing maps, a similar necessity for interactive hunting maps was identified within the Wildlife Commission, which manages 2 million acres of public and private lands in North Carolina for public hunting, trapping and inland fishing. These areas collectively are designated as "game lands." Based on the success of the Fishing Areas Map, the Public Game Lands Map was republished to use current technology and make the interface more user friendly (see Figure 2). Hunters can search for game lands by name, county or a radius around an address as well as primary game species and camping facilities. There are plans to develop a SQL Server database that will allow hunters to search the game lands Figure 3. The new Boating Access Areas map is scheduled for release in early fall 2013 and can be accessed at www.ncwildlife.org/Boating/ WheretoBoat.aspx. by hunting season, so they can enter a date, species and general location, and find the hunting areas that meet their criteria. "If you have an internet connection, you have all you need to find places to hunt, fish and trap in North Carolina," adds Isaac Harrold, Lands Program manager for the Wildlife Commission. "All 2 million acres of our public game lands are mapped and accessible through an online interactive game-land map application. Finding a place to go has never been easier." The detailed boundaries for the game-lands polygons are one of the main reasons the Commission decided to build interactive maps using ArcGIS Online for Organizations. ArcGIS Online provided the ability to create cached services for the game lands that significantly improve the map's display time. As users zoom into an area of interest, greater levels of details are shown for the game lands, including the classifications of game-land areas such as blackbear sanctuaries, safety zones and waterfowl impoundments. Users also can view the locations of parking areas and campgrounds, and each site description contains a link to a high-resolution PDF map that can be printed. Where to Boat Figure 2.
