Thrive reTail TheraPy Housed in a former Atwood Avenue bank built circa 1901, Carrie Simpson (back) and Patty Schmitz Ball (front)—a favorite longtime Madison retail guru— stock Vault with hip-factor décor that's high-quality and artistic, yet livable. vaulT inTeriors & desiGn FOr meTrOPOliTan hOmeS A rhino stands in curious guard at the entrance of Vault Interiors & Design, Carrie Simpson's new East Side design and décor studio, as a testament to her design mantra: "Every room should have something a little warty in it—because you just love that piece and it sets the character for your space." Vault's personality is purposefully Soho, and the loft space aims to keep us all shopping here—instead of Chicago or Minneapolis—for edgy and youthful urban décor. Mostly American-made, her edited selection is storied: unique vintage finds, repurposed materials incorporated into artisan-made pieces, a boutique line from an "artist formerly known as pop musician Prince's creative director," and more. All good characters are a study in contrast. For Simpson that means artistic yet functional pieces that appeal to everyone who inhabits a space. Selections juxtapose masculine and feminine; organically rustic with steely industrial fabrication; vintage patina with new polish. Essentially, Vault's got style for everyone, whether they're a cool modernist, Midwest traditionalist, or just looking for something a little warty.
