78 • NOVEMBER 2013 • WORLD FENCE NEWS National Drowning Prevention Alliance sets dates for 2014 educational conference The National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) has announced that, by popular demand, their annual symposium has been re-classified to be an educational conference. The conference will be held at the Chuck Wielgus Wyndham Orlando Keynote speaker Resort, March 19 – 21, 2014 in Orlando, Fla. The NDPA educational conference will offer top aquatic safety and drowning prevention programs for all bodies of water, strategies, research and information to advance aquatic safety and drowning prevention efforts nationwide for people of all ages, ethnicities and socio-economic levels, the organization reported. The educational event is designed to offer attendees the most current information in research, products, educational programming, outreach strategies, policy and code, international relations, and other topics re- lated to aquatic safety and drowning prevention. Educational presentations will encompass a wide array of topics related to aquatic safety and drowning prevention. These include pool safety; open water safety; research and information to advance drowning prevention; aquatic safety products; national public educational programming including public school programs; outreach strategies; policy and code; international relations; medical advances; the use of devices to prevent drowning; advocacy groups; non-profit organizations; lifeguarding; and the importance of swim instruction as it relates to aquatic safety and drowning prevention. Chuck Wielgus, executive director of USA Swimming® and CEO of the USA Swimming Foundation®, will be the keynote speaker at the educational conference. Wielgus's educational background includes an M.Ed. received from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. in 1974, and a B.A. in history from Providence College in 1972. Several years ago, Wielgus was diagnosed with stage III cancer, and he has been valiantly fighting this disease while continuing a rigorous work schedule. In addition to receiving the Nadar Por Vida award for promoting diversity in swimming, Wielgus has co-authored three books with Sports Illustrated senior writer Alexander Wolff. He resides in Colorado Springs, Colo. with his wife, Nancy, and four children. The NDPA's annual educational conference is the leading national conference devoted to aquatic safety and drowning prevention. Anyone with an interest in learn- ing more about these topics is invited to attend the event. The National Drowning Prevention Alliance is a volunteer-driven, 501c3 non-profit organization. The NDPA's mission is to prevent drowning and aquatic injuries, by educating, leading, engaging, and supporting the public, its members, chapters, and partners.
