PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE Reflecting and Looking Ahead Although it's hard to believe, I have been back at P&CMA for more than a year now. During this "second-first year" I have had the opportunity to reflect on many things relating to the association, our members and the industry. Here are some of my observations. J. Bart Fletcher, CAE P&CMA President First, it's important to point out (without hesitation) that your association is on solid ground. We enjoy a strong reputation in Montgomery, and we have an effective governmental affairs program. The quality of our programs and events remains high and our financial position is solid, allowing us to continue to serve you for many years. So that's the good news. But as always, there are areas where we need improvement. I'll touch on a few in no particular order. • 12 Oil Prophets Political Action Committee Giving - Let's be honest, few people really enjoy giving money to politicians; that's just a fact. Nevertheless, the ability to actively participate in the election process is vital to the association's future successes. The more "like minded" people we have in elected positions, the less likely it is that we see legislation or regulations that are strongly anti-business. In a four-year election cycle, the P&CMA PAC will raise approximately $100,000. While this sounds like a great deal of money, similar trade associations representing other Alabama businesses will raise significantly more ($500,000 to $1 million in some cases). If every P&CMA member would commit to give a minimum of $500 to the PAC every year we would raise $500,000 every four year election cycle. When you think about it, $500 annually is a small price to pay compared to what bad laws or regulations could cost your business. • Participation in Association Sponsored Events - Our world changed a lot in the 8 years I was away. These days we have more information instantly available through our computer and our smart phone than the association used to provide in a year. But the one thing that the computer and smart phone cannot provide is interpersonal communication and relationships. Trade Shows, Conventions, Golf Outings, etc. provide the opportunity to interact with people on a level that technology cannot provide. I cannot begin to count the number of business deals I know were made possible because of the friendships and interaction that was developed and strengthened at P&CMA meetings and events. I also know that your time is a valuable commodity. For this reason, you have our word that we will always strive to offer you something of value that exceeds the cost of attendance at all P&CMA meetings and events. I am personally asking all association members to make 2014 the year of recommitment
