SURVEYOR1:PARTIII By Bruce W. Smith C ontractors, landscapers, road builders, fleet managers, and just about anyone else who drives their pickups for work or business love to have their trucks setup with aftermarket auxiliary lights: Strobes warn other drivers to be cautious; driving and fog lights increase driver safety; flood lights illuminate work areas; and back-up lights make it easy to see hazards lurking in the dark. Upgrading a work truck with well-designed, longlasting, properly-placed aftermarket lights help make the driver safer both on the road and on jobsites where conditions are rift with potential problems. We took those concerns seriously very early in the design process of Surveyor 1. Surveyors, and others whose jobs often require them to leave the shop before sunrise and return well after dark, need great lights on their work trucks. I've seen land surveyors loading their trucks and then driving back roads well before sunrise to get to a jobsite. They never know what is around the next corner or the type of weather and road conditions they might encounter on- and off-pavement. Really good lights are a high-value commodity in the surveying business. Whomever wins Surveyor 1 next April will have plenty of lights to handle all those scenarios right at their fingertips. Literally. A RIGID WORK PLAN No one knows aftermarket lighting better than Rigid Industries. They are a leading supplier and innovator of LED lighting products in a dizzying array of configurations. Rigid has tiny single-LED units that can be placed just about anywhere to monster-sized, multiple-row LED light bars that span the width of a pickup cab, to a variety of round, square and rectangular light packages with spot, diffuse and colored lenses. You need it, they got it. We used a variety of Rigid's LEDs on our MobilDelvac/Ram Trucks 2013 2500HD Crew Cab 4x4. Our first order of business was improving the truck's reverse lights, which don't do much in stock form. We mounted a pair of Rigid SR-Q2 flood lights – one on each corner of the Fab Fours' rear bumper – to provide a wide, bright pattern whenever the truck is put in reverse. Then we installed a pair of their D2 Dually Driving lights in the Fab Fours winch bumper, positioned down low nestled beside to the tow hooks. (To see our detailed how-to's on these installs or read more about the products, go to ProPickupMag.com and look for "Installs" on the Surveyor 1 web page.) 20 PROPICKUP December 2013 LED driving lights, light bar, strobes & more make our day at night
