have guessed that our 2013 Award of Merit recipient was Walt Warriner. LIFE MEMBERSHIP WE WERE ALL WINNERS!* Life membership in the SMA is given to those veteran members who have generously devoted their wisdom, time, and toil to the SMA and its mission. Life members are the people who serve in whatever role is needed, who take on the tough assignments, and who have a pathological inability to say no when the organization calls for help. Nominees for this award are the folks who have given their support and experience to our organization over a period of years or decades. The 2013 winner is a man who has done all of these things and more as a widely respected professional and community leader and as a past board member, vicepresident, and president of SMA. He has also played an instrumental role in SMA by leading many committees, including the Accreditation Committee. He is one of the creators of the popular Arborist Exchange Program and has in recent years become a banquet highlight as his crooning reveals the eagerly anticipated Tree of the Year. Congratulations, Life Membership Honoree Doug Still. PRESIDENT'S AWARD OF APPRECIATION From outgoing president Nick Kuhn: "Serving as the president of SMA is an honor made possible only through the help and support of many people. Our executive director, our editor, our webmaster, our board, and our many committees all do tremendous work to keep the SMA working for you. As president I have the discretion to recognize a person who has been of particular help to me over the past year, and I'd like to thank and recognize Steve Shurtz. Ah, victory! Friends of the Urban Forest Education Coordinator Michele Palmer crosses the finish line first in the Fun Run. He has at one time or another chaired or served on pretty much every committee that the SMA has. His artistic talents find their way into many SMA places, including the front of this year's Fun Run & Walk t-shirt. He somehow also finds time to squeeze in his full time job in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but I don't know how. In the past year, he has been of great help to me in countless ways, and I am truly appreciative for all he does for SMA." RECOGNITION OF OUTGOING PRESIDENT From incoming president Rachel Barker: "Being the president of the SMA is a lot like herding cats, but this herd of cats must keep moving forward, and the devotion of our president is critical to our ongoing growth and success. On behalf of all of our members, I'd like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank our president for everything he's done this year... let's hear it for Nick Kuhn." www.urban-forestry.com Right to left: Michele Palmer took first prize in the Fun Run; Mike Zalewski, second place; Philip Potyondy, third place, and David Lefcourt, fourth place.
