WOODS COFFEE
PYRAMIDS
The Woods Coffee Company
announced a collaboration
with Bellingham's Spice Hut to
overhaul its tea offering. Woods
will now offer new pyramid tea
sachets, which the company
says feature an improved
design and a fuller, more robust
flavor. Like the original bags,
the new pyramid sachets are
biodegradable and free of glues,
inks, staples and other flavorchanging materials (they're also
GMO-free and gluten-free). All
14 of Woods Coffee's locations
will carry the new design.
SCAA SEATTLE
REGISTRATION
projects like community gardens, food
storage and preservation and building
healthier kitchens. The projects are
intended to reduce malnutrition in
children and create alternative incomes
for women.
For the first time, the SCAA has
announced a two-year partnership with
a host city for its annual event. The
2014 and 2015 expositions will be held
at the Washington State Convention
Center in Seattle, WA. The 2014 event
will take place April 24-27. For more

Green Mountain
Coffee has awarded
the Café Femenino
Foundation a $46,200
grant to support
poverty reduction programs in
Colombia and Peru in 2014. The grant
funding will support female coffeeproducers and their families through

announced plans
to open a training
center and roaster
in Emeryville, CA,
which is expected
to open in the first half of 2014. The
opening marks the company's ninth
training center and its second roaster,
after the original in Durham, NC.
The training center will host events
and coffee classes that are part of
the company's Counter Intelligence
educational program. It will also be
open for free public coffee cuppings.
The 12,000 square foot building was
previously used as an organic food
distribution center.
Counter Culture is also sponsoring
the Big Eastern Regional Coffee
Competition, taking place January
17-19 in Durham, NC. Also hosted by
Dallis Bros. Coffee and produced by the
SCAA and Barista Guild of America,
the competition attracts baristas
from the Northeast and Southeast.
Winners will compete in the US Coffee
Championship in Seattle this April.
Contestants in the Barista Competition
prepare and serve four espressos,
four cappuccinos and four signature
espresso beverages during a 15-minute
window. Those who compete in the
Brewers Cup are judged in a blind
tasting. The event will be held at The
Cotton Room in Durham.
CHICAGO ESPRESSO BAR
Caffe Vergnano
recently debuted a
standing espresso bar
at Eataly Chicago, the
company's second
installation after the New York Eataly
location. The bar will offer a menu of
espresso, macchiati and housemade
pastries, as well as the entire line of
Caffe Vergnano products including the
recently released Nespresso-compatible
capsules. The company's 1882 Coffee
Shop chain (which now numbers 70
locations) was launched in 2000.
