all the other cancer patients going through chemo just like my
dad. And I asked them, "Does anyone want anything? I'm
going for co ee…and I've got his wallet!" People laughed, like
I was making a joke out of having my dad's wallet, which I
didn't, by the way. And I took a few orders and brought back
some co ees that day.
My dad had an eight-week course of treatment, and every
Wednesday at 10 a.m. I asked the people if they wanted co ee.
I brought back co ees every week. When my dad was done
with treatment and I took him home, I asked him, "We've
had a lot of fun bringing co ees to people the last few weeks.
Should I keep doing this every week?" And he said, "Yeah, go
ahead." And I did.
SCR: And you've kept it up for seven years! You've even
added two additional locations to your weekly route:
the Rose Cancer Center and CARE House of Oakland
County, which advocates for neglected and abused
children. How do you keep it going?
Dewey: I'm not saying it's fate, but I feel like this is something
I'm supposed to be doing. And I'm blessed. ese people are
going through chemo, and it's awful. e doctors and nurses
who treat them are angels. I'm blessed to even be allowed in
there.
SCR: How are you nancing all of this?
Dewey: Well, between the three locations, I'm usually buying
80 to 90 drinks a week. It adds up to about $250 per week.
At rst I was using some of my own money to do it, which I
was happy to do. But then a er a while, my co ee runs started
getting some media attention. at's when the donations
started coming in. ose donors have helped sustain the
