"Second, there are real strides being made towards a 100
percent sustainable package that also provides the protection

freshness," Vandenberg says. "Today there are commercially
available packages on the market that are made of 60 percent
renewable and compostable materials and progress is being
made at PBi and other companies on moving the percentage
of renewable and compostable materials up."'
Also, food-safety regulations continue to evolve as the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration implements the Food Safety
Modernization Act. "It aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is
safe by shiing the focus from responding to contamination to
preventing it," Vandenberg says.
"A regulation that is in progress and should be noted in light of the
growing number of coee packages that are sourced from overseas is
the Foreign Supplier Verication Program that requires all importers
to establish a program to verify that imported food is in compliance
with food safety rules and allergen labeling requirements."
Signicant labeling regulations that came in to eect in the
U.S. in 2013, or which are being considered by the FDA relate
to food allergens, gluten-free labeling of foods and trans-fat
labeling.
