his is my first book and the time was right. A book needs time—time for assessment of the work, time for contemplation, time for scrutiny. It also requires time off the road, not something I am always willing to give up. After 13 years on the road, there is an abun- dance of work. The idea of doing a book was daunting and the longer I waited the more overwhelming the idea became. Eventually, there is a need to see the work in its entirety. It gives insight and hopefully a feeling of accomplishment. Working with David Chickey at Radius Books made the process man- ageable and engaging. His demeanor is calm and re- assuring. I started by going through the entire archive and cataloguing my work. After, David and I went to task—laying it out and talking it through. At some point, you have to throw your hands up in the air, go with your gut and stop obsessing about the one you should have put in or left out. There is something in- spiring in most parts of the country if you are receptive and engaged.
