30 CULTURED CONTRIBUTORS Each year, VICTORIA SAMBUNARIS structures her life around a photographic journey crossing the American landscape. Her most recent project was in South Texas photographing the intersection of geology, industry and culture encompassing the international boundary and energy industry. In 2011, a 12-year survey of her work was exhibited at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, and last year at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago. Her photographs are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the National Gallery of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Lannan Foundation. "An artist whose work I think about often is Chantal Akerman. While driving out west at night, alone on a solitary road, houses lit in the distance, I think of her slow-paced film, "The Meetings of Anna." The scenes are familiar—the solitary female, the hotel room, the train. The slow pace, long shots and focus on the minutiae are all something I strive for in my work, but she nails it." "Which artist, architect or designer is on your radar?" MICHAEL REYNOLDS is a New York-based creative director who works across many disciplines and media as an editorial stylist, exhibition and set designer, advertising director, curator and strategic brand consultant. Born in Manhattan's East Village and educated at New York University, Reynolds joined the editorial staff of Vogue magazine in 1990. He spent six years there before joining Condé Nast's revitalized House & Garden as a senior style editor. In the mid-'90s, Reynolds became a key member of the team that conceived and launched Wallpaper. Today, he continues in his role as Wallpaper's American editor, while also serving as a contributing editor to Architectural Digest and, as of this issue, Cultured. PHOTOS BY FRANCOIS DISCHINGER (REYNOLDS); JASON SCHMIDT (SAMBUNARIS) "Photographer Victoria Sambunaris. I'm looking forward to her first book, 'Victoria Sambunaris: Taxonomy of a Landscape,' which is coming out this spring." SHAMIM M. MOMIN is the director, curator and co-founder of LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division). Prior to founding LAND, Momin was associate curator of contemporary art at the Whitney Museum of American Art, where she co-curated the 2004 and 2008 Whitney Biennial exhibitions. This year, LAND celebrates its fifth anniversary. In honor of this milestone, featuring an organization founded and run by women, the core of this year's programming will be focused on the celebration of women in the arts and in broader contemporary culture. LAND's 2014 programming includes "The Manifest Destiny Billboard Project," a multi-artist, cross-country billboard initiative, and "Alter/Abolish/Address," a group exhibition of five public projects in Washington, D.C. "There isn't one person on my radar—more an entire movement. I'm into these 'tiny houses,' especially Kelly Davis' Escape log-cabin-slash-RV and Front Architects' Single Hauz."
