The circular design echoes the peaceful curve of the pond's shoreline, while the natural stone boulders in the bed spaces help soften the grade change and transition from hardscape to lawn. The patio's 3.5- to 5.5-foot retaining walls ac- commodate the site's steep slope. Rough-hewn, rustic retaining wall block complements the natural stone present on the home and pro- vides a color accent. One challenging aspect was installing the curved steel railings. Custom built by the contractor, the railings pro- vide a backrest for the sitting wall, and address the homeowners' safety concerns. The radii of the railing had to match those of the retaining walls perfectly. It was also important to maintain pleasing proportions between the circular shapes. The color of the railing complements the home, while the vertical hardscape elements help the steel successfully integrate into the design. Award: Segmental Retaining Walls - Residential - More than 1,000 sf Project Title: Heber City Residence Project Location: Heber City, Utah Square Feet of Project: 4,500 Contractor: Serenity Excavating Main Product Manufacturer: Pavestone Company Project Designer: Serenity Excavating Project Description: Homeowners in Heber City, Utah needed to correct a huge, sloping front yard. Serenity Excavating did so by installing Pavestone retaining wall and paver products in an impres- sive Wasatch color blend. Property space was increased with the ad- dition of multiple sets of stairs and by adding Pavestone Highland Stone retaining walls. Award: Segmental Retaining Walls - Transportation Project Title: Robert B, Diemer WTP - North Access Road Project Location: Carbon Canyon area, Yorba Linda, Calif. Square Feet of Project: 70,000 Contractor: Soil Retention Systems, Inc. Main Product Manufacturer: Soil Retention, Inc. Project Designer: Soil Retention Designs, Inc. Project Description: Approximately 70,000 sf of Verdura segmen- tal retaining wall was installed by Soil Retention Systems for the general contractor, Sukut Construction. These walls are the primary support for a secondary access road ascending the steep hillside of an existing water treatment plant facility in Yorba Linda, Calif. Five Verdura walls were built, with some walls reaching as high as 40 feet. These walls navigate the site's rugged and steep topography. The total length of the retaining walls is approximately 2,500 lft. The Verdura retaining wall system was specified due to the plantable wall fascia and superior strength qualities, which exceed the geotechnical and high-seismic demands of the project. The high form capacity of the Verdura wall allows for heavy equipment (such as scrapers), to run directly behind the wall face and backfill the geogrid-reinforced soil mass of the structure. Each Verdura block has a lip for high shear ca- pacity and a "positive mechanical connection" between the block and the geogrid which combines to create an extremely strong wall face. These walls were hydro-seeded with native foliage and estab- lished vegetation faster than the surrounding cut-slopes. The fully plantable wall face helps soften the look of large walls and mitigate the environmental impacts to the Chino Hills State Park and sur- rounding neighborhoods to the south.
