Tasting room service for wineries T aste Places is a new design business to help Pacifi c Northwest winery owners with tasting rooms and branding. The service, launched by Anna Caddey, evolved from her master's thesis titled "Experience- oriented marketing and brand identity in the winery environment." The wine market is competitive and wine tourists now expect an experience along with great wine when they go wine tasting, Caddey said. Taste Places can help winery owners understand their winery from their customers' perspectives and identify design strategies to improve customer experiences and long-term brand relationships. Caddey can help wineries use graphic and interior design strategies to promote their brand story, using local culture and the winery environment to connect customers to the surrounding region. Caddey grew up in Manson, Washington, where her family grows apples and cherries. She received a bachelor's degree in graphic design from Eastern Washington University and a master's in interior design at Washington State University. She is based in Spokane, Washington. Soil health test A new comprehensive soil test, the result of col- laboration between U.S. Department of Agri- culture researchers and Woods End Laboratories, allows laboratories to more accu- rately measure soil health. The Soil Health Nutrient Toolbox measures a host of things like organic car- bon and nitrogen and microbial carbon dioxide respiration, an indicator of soil microbe activity. As part of the new toolbox, Woods End Labs has developed a quick and easy test to measure carbon dioxide respiration in a simple, precalibrated procedure. The patented kit, called Solvita, comes in two appli- cations—one for soil labs and one for use in the fi eld. Growers can ask their labs to incorporate the Solvita test in their overall program, or use the fi eld kit to run their own test. The Soil Health Nutrient Toolbox is an open-source system and can be adopted by any lab. The test gives an assessment of overall soil health.
