56 • MAY 2014 • WORLD FENCE NEWS (Editor's note: We talk a lot about the need to conduct regular meetings or "tool box talks" as part of a com- pany's overall safety program. The purpose of the program, of course, is to protect your employees, but admit- tedly, it is also to help protect your company in the event of an accident and resulting liability. There is no sin- gle "best" way to conduct a safety meeting, but here are some valuable tips that were compiled by the Ameri- can Fence Association several years ago, and can be used as guidelines. You should tailor your program to your specific needs, and possibly with input from a professional advisor. Continued from last month, below you will find some suggested topics on which to base your tool box talks.) Appropriate topics There are a number of topics that can be covered at tailgate meetings, but your own group's activities should furnish the source of all, or almost all, of the topics. But here are some sug- gestions: Vehicles and equipment 1. Fueling or working on equip- ment with engine running or in en- closed spaces. 2. Leaving equipment unattended with engine running. 3. Proper procedures in setting up pumps, mixers, hoists, etc. 4. Proper driving procedures, avoiding rear end collisions, intersec- tion crashes. 5. Maintenance of truck, driver re- ports, complaints. 6. Backup signal devices. 7. Use of seat belts on vehicles and motorized equipment. 8. Use of signal men in moving equipment and vehicles. 9. Basic signals by person in di- rection drive. Ladders 1. Reporting deficiencies in equip- ment to supervisor, scaffolding or working area foreman. 2. Proper usage of ladders and ramps. Personal protective equipment 1. Proper footwear and care of feet. 2. Eye protection as needed and eye burn care. 3.
