May 2004 cover Through the years with WFN BY JIM HART, WFN CONTRIBUTING EDITOR IN MEMORIAM In remembrance of long-time World Fence News contributing editor Jim Hart, we will occasionally reprint articles from past issues. Here is one of his classics from 1992. Sadly, Jim passed away a number of years ago, but his unique fence humor lives on. • • • Thank God there ain't more days in the month! Normally I'm $45 or $50 short at the end of normal months. The more days there are, the more I'm gonna be short. Someday I'm going to get revenge on that capricious, shifting, inconsis- tent digit of a supposed power that rules human destiny. Yeah, the Fickle Finger of Fate strikes again! For years I've been after the crew to use store-bought dental floss for those on-the-job lunches instead of using my 4 pound test monofilament fishing line. Course, as far as they are concerned, mine is cheaper (it's free!). I swear, I'll kill 'em all and bury 'em in post holes if OSHA gets onto me for this! I can live with the fact that they prefer to clean the wax outta their ears with my set of truck keys instead of their own. I overlook the fact that one of 'em lost us a big job by asking the potential customer's wife who the fa- ther of their newborn baby was. (Mark that down, guys, It's definitely a no-no when selling fence!) Anyway, I recently put to the test a basic rule of acquired behavior called "start gradually, then taper off." This is a defense system against Murphy's Law, invented by a bloke named Bode who thought Murphy was an optimist. Did you ever do a fence estimate on a moonless, starless pitch black night? Try it sometime, it's a lotta fun! We set out with four hours of daylight left to find a street the post office swears exists, but the county road de- partment swears don't! I was starting to believe the county! We follow the customer's direc- tions and arrive in the general area where we figure people would know the location. They don't. Everyone has heard of it, of course, they just don't know where it is. We circle the area so many times the people are starting to wave at us as we pass.
