56 • JUNE 2014 • WORLD FENCE NEWS Planning for succession the developing and building stages of your company, if you have prepared correctly, you will take pride in the naming of your successor because you have been right in the middle of his/her development. Commandment 10 – Thou shalt retire and install the successor with thy power within thy lifetime. Again, I would think if you have prepared properly, you would not be afraid to step aside and enjoy the fruits of your labor before it's too late. Don't be like that aging athlete who leaves the game when his skills have eroded to the point where he's a shadow of his former self. Know when to leave. Commandment 11 – Thou shalt settle thy estate plans now because thou can't take it with you. It's an amazing grasp of the obvi- ous. Once we reach the level of recog- nizing our mortality as opposed to living the level of invincibility, the es- tate plan should be in place. If you haven't done it – do it. Make arrangements now. Commandment 12 – Thou shalt apportion thy time to see that these commandments are kept. While enjoying your retirement and time away from the business that have been well earned, keep in touch with the business from time to time to make sure that all commandments are being kept. Make sure to always check with your attorney each step along the way in developing any program. You've been privileged to hear Dr. Danko's 12 commandments and some of my com- mentary that hopefully will help you to realize once more that PROFIT IS NOT A DIRTY WORD!™ World Fence News contributing editor Jim Lucci is president of Man- agement Motivational Associates of Freeport, N.Y., and for 30 years has written a monthly column on business management and issues which affect fence company owners and managers.
