SECURITY SYSTEMS NEWS FEBRUARY 2011 www.securitysystemsnews.com IP tech roundtable Continued from page 9 the big boys have stopped fighting megapixel and are embracing it, the market can move forward. Jeremy: Video technologies will lead the way to IP. The fact that all new camera technologies such as H.264 and megapixel are only being developed in IP will speed adapta- tion. Standards in camera integration have been created and are making headway where there were none before ... To take advantage of the latest video technologies you have to go IP. The costs now are the same or less then analog systems and there is a large selection of products avail- able. There is no longer an excuse to not go IP for video. Paul S.: IP has certainly emerged as the dominant video surveillance technology, and IP as a rule is a rapidly changing technology, so we could conclude that most years should be dubbed “The Year of IP”. This year, IP-based security technol- ogy made significant advances with Megapixel and HD (high defini- tion), which moved from a niche solution to a mainstream product offering in that most of the major camera companies are now offering a line of Megapixel/HD cameras. We see two reasons for this shift. The costs of HD cameras are now comparable with those of standard definition and advances in motion detection. Secondly, and related, H.264 reached full adoption in 2010 SpecSpeak Continued from page areas. At MCA, our project leaders are required to possess multiple professional certifica- tions; the core of what we do is analysis, and we try to choose projects in fields where our services can establish a high order of value added to the project. When you have a really good collaboration with an integrator, what are the essential elements of that relationship? The project team for the inte- grator should be properly select- ed. For example, we wouldn’t accept someone who’s never completed a new hospital or LNG re-gas terminal as the head of an integrator’s project team. The branch office and the corporate office of the integrator should support the project team. There’s always the tendency on the part of the integrator to be penny wise and dollar foolish. The end user, the consulting team and the integrator need to all work together as a team. At the end of the day, the project cannot succeed unless the integrator, who is installing the project, also succeeds. SSN —Martha Entwistle as the compression of choice for both standard definition and high definition cameras. This resulted in lower bandwidth per camera, which yielded a reduced cost of storage which, in turn, has made high definition technology both deployable and cost-effective. A third major shift in 2010 with respect to the advancement of IP- based technologies was the con- solidation of companies. Particularly, we saw consolidation of companies with specialty technologies such as video analytics and PSIM capabilities with traditional Video Management Solution (VMS) companies. Martha and Dan: How has the adoption of IP-based security technology been impacted by the economy? Has it suffered during the downturn? Is adoption on the rise now that the economy is starting to turn around? Sam: “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it,” and “Good enough for now” drove behavior during the downtown. This impacted IT and security infrastructure refresh. A better business alignment of IT and security will support a more rapid migration to IP-based secu- rity technology as the business climate improves. Dieter: Large projects have certainly been impacted by the NEWS 11 economic downturn. But this has not affected the adopt ion of IP-based solu- tions because IP is inherently more manage- able and offers a lower total cost of ownership over time.
