Biodiesel industry Welcomes reneWaBle Fuels court ruling The National Biodiesel Board issued the following statement on May 6 from Anne Steckel, vice president of federal affairs, after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia denied a petroleum industry chal- lenge to the 2013 Renewable Fuel Standard requirements: The court's decision today is only the latest in a long series of cases in which the courts have found that the RFS is a fair and reasonable program for achieving our national energy objectives, including promoting more Advanced Biofuel such as biodiesel. The bot- tom line is that there was more than enough EPA-designated Advanced Biofuel available last year to meet the standards. The case was brought by oil refiner Monroe Energy LLC. NBB intervened in the case, delivering oral arguments along- side the EPA, to defend enforcement of the statutory RFS volumes, particularly in the advanced biofuel category. The court rejected Monroe's arguments that the 2013 standards were invalid because the EPA was late in final- izing the volumes, and that the EPA should have reduced overall and Advanced Biofuel volume requirements when it reduced cel- lulosic ethanol volumes last year. NBB is the U.S. trade association for the biodiesel industry. oBituary: Jim HoWells [Editor's note: Our condolences to our col- leagues up north on the death of former COHA Chairman Jim Howells. His obituary, slightly abridged, in his own words.] My OBITUARY If that is my picture at the top it means I have died. I have not passed, passed-on, passed-over or indeed passed the butcher's shop. No, having lived a fantastic life I am now dead. And with apologies to Monty Pythons parrot, I had a great kick of the can and have now kicked the bucket. I am deceased, bereft of life, the Late Mr. Howells. I have completed my 74th journey around the Sun. I have left my body to the U of T Medical School. If they accept it will mean no funeral as such. I would, how- ever, invite you to attend what my family has prepared. Julia my darling wife of 50 years...best move I ever made; turning left at the ash tree. She will explain it if you drop in. My two daughters, Carolyn and Sue — no man ever had better. Just make sure you know what you are talk- ing about if you ever debate them. Just ask my favorite sons-in-law, Brad and Maurice. Grand children, mine really have been a major pleasure of my life. J.J., Tyler, Debbie, Ashley and James. No. 1 line on my Hockey Team. Go Guys! To the rest of my family; my mom & dad, three brothers, 20 nieces and neph- ews, and, at the last count, over 60 great and great-great nephews and nieces; and, of course, my adopted family, Win & Ted, and the rest of Julia's family. During my life I have had some special relation- ships with some very special relatives of mine, you know who you are. So a special thank you to all of you. Friends, I have loved having you part of my life. We exchanged parts of ourselves in our friendship, and enlarged each other in the process. I completed some of my best bucket-list wishes with you my friends, thanks. Only one wish now. That you read this with a smile, keep what is dear to you in your hearts and think about donating a piece of, or the whole of, your body to medical science. And, of course, make a generous donation to your favorite char- ity. So, on with your lives. Don't forget to drop by and raise a glass. It really has been a blast. Cheers all... Jim Howells.
