56 • JUNE 2011 • WORLD FENCE NEWS Marc Hudson was known as the “barefoot fence man” continued from page 54 right away because our facility wasn’t paved but rather filled with rocks, some nails, pieces of wood and who knows what else, and he just walked across the ground as if it was just like a tile floor, smiling all the way. “Thirty-two years later, still with no shoes on his feet and still with the biggest smile, he continued each day with the same charming attitude as if it was the first day we met. He was al- ways kind and considerate, always had a smile and was always cheerful. When Marc was diagnosed and told he had only a few months to live (what would you do?), he enjoyed what he had done for past 39 years – fence! This is what he wanted to continue to do until the end, and so he did. “Special people leave behind spe- cial memories and if we can carry his positive outlook in our everyday walk Bridgeport, CT Phone: 800-221-0340 Fax: 203-330-9578 Great Neck, NY Phone: 888-287-4942 Fax: 516-482-0808 A Division of Bushwick Metals, Inc. Co., Mulberry, Florida “Marc Hudson introduced me to the fence business back in 1974. My recollections of that time are of going out on some vacant land with this guy with no shoes on and ‘logging’ for Cy- press trees that had been felled by de- velopers. We would then bring them to ‘Smith Brothers’ sawmill off Starkey Road and have the trees cut into cants, which we would then cut into stringers or slats. We would see a coral snake and he would say ‘leave it alone.’ I was finding out that Marc was a sometime herpetologist. Back in those days we would load and unload truckloads of material by hand, no forklift. “We had a lot of fun too. There was always a beer in the fridge, a good joke to be told, and maybe that unmis- takable scent of burning rope. All we did was wood fence back then. “Today Bay Area Fence Factory has come a long way. There are several forklifts, all lumber is bought ready for fabrication, and there are multiple crews and types of fence being in- stalled. Marc’s dream of a real fence company (as he used to call the big guys) came to fruition. Although Marc did not own the company at the end of his life, he was still the driving force, still the same barefoot guy who was out logging 36 years ago, still in great shape from years of working hard with his hands. We will all miss him, even his competitors.” – Brian Driscoll, Brian’s Fence, Inc., Oldsmar, Florida “It is with great sadness that we lose an industry veteran. Marc Hudson was both a good friend and a valued colleague. I remember when I first started out with Bob Burton Fence Contractors about 30 years ago, Marc already had an established company less than a mile from me. “We got to know each other very well back then, and he definitely taught me a few things in my own business. We will truly miss Marc and we express our gratitude for his dedi- cation to the industry over the last few decades. He will be missed.” – Robert L. Burton, president and CEO, Poly Vinyl Creations, Hudson, Florida “You couldn’t be around Marc too long before you came to understand that he was a free-spirit and true orig- inal. The first time I ever spent a good bit of time with him was when we called on a big homeowner’s associa- tion to give a sales presentation.
