68 • JUNE 2011 • WORLD FENCE NEWS Major overhead track gate strengthens perimeter of Pennsylvania prison continued from page 1 The Cumberland County Prison in Carlisle, Penn., southwest of Harris- burg, has undertaken an extensive pro- gram of expansion and renovation to accommodate a rising population of male and female inmates and to en- hance the safety of the facility. A second phase of the expansion and renovation is currently underway, following the completion of stage one, which included the installation by Abel Fence LLC of a massive rein- forced overhead track gate to control access to the prison’s receiving docks. The gate is a modified version of Tymetal Corporation’s PLUSS over- head slide gate. While not K rated for crash resistance, Abel Fence managing member Thomas Erb said, “I sure wouldn’t want to hit them in my car.” As mentioned on the cover, four 14 ft. tall x 13 ft. wide leaves are re- quired to cover the 48 ft. wide clear opening. The leaves are overhead track driven, and controlled by the central security system in the guard station. There are also intercoms on the out- side for communication with the guards. The leaves ride on dual v- tracks set in a 2 ft. wide x 3-1/2 in. deep concrete grade beam across the opening. The drive beam is 72 feet wide, and was set in place on eight 8-5/8 in. posts using a crane, said Erb. All field welding on the system was performed by Abel Fence partner Wesley Blan- chard.
