WORLD FENCE NEWS • JUNE 2011 • 35 Access control products distribu- tor Encon Electronics collaborated with leading vehicle identification manufacturer Sirit, Inc. for two semi- nars on Thursday, April 14, 2011. The afternoon and evening work- shops were both provided by Sirit’s western account manager, Mike Toren. Encon scheduled the additional evening seminar in order to accommo- date the various work schedules of their dealers. Both sessions were well attended and received excellent feedback, Encon reports. Mark Andrade of Statcomm Inc. in Mountain View, Calif. said, “Toren’s presentation exemplified his excellent knowledge in the field, as well as sales. “The product handouts and litera- ture he provided were great and al- lowed me to present the information to my co-workers who were not able to attend the seminar,” he said. Toren began the seminar with a comprehensive overview of radio fre- quency identification (RFID). “The reader sends out electromag- netic field to establish a read zone. When a tag enters the zone, the elec- tromagnetic energy activates the tag. The reader collects the identity data which in turn activates entry into the gate,” Toren said. “The system is simple and in- volves only the RFID reader/antenna, the access controller, and the tags. There are active tags, those continu- ously running an internal battery, pas- “ ~ Sirit seminar latest in Encon Electronics training series sive assisted tags that are passive but have an internal battery and passive tags that are without an internal bat- tery,” he noted. Toren covered all the products that fall within each tag category, ranging from windshield tags to headlamp mount tags. “All the tags are tuned for different surfaces. Some are good for glass and others are good for plastic,” he added. In the next segment of the semi- nar, Toren focused on installation of RFID systems. He discussed pre-in- stallation variables and concerns, how to conduct a site survey and sources of range interference. “To maximize effectiveness of RFID systems, you want the narrow- est possible lane so that the vehicles will always approach at the same dis- tance and angle to the reader.” Next, Toren provided an in-depth presentation on the new Sirit 4100 ve- hicle identification system. “The key features of the 4100 in- clude an impressive 25’ read range, one built in antenna and a unique iden- tification process. Unlike the ID Flex, the identification codes are burned into the chip of the tag. This new design feature offers a built in security system which prevents unauthorized users from selling the tags on the internet.” Toren then outlined a sample in- stallation of an automatic vehicle ID install using the 4100. He covered sin- gle versus double lane installation, rec- ommended distances for the reader and detector, reader mounting and wiring layout. Alfred Ortega of Ornamental Iron Solutions in Freedom, Calif. said, “I thought installing Sirit was going to be hard but it’s so easy to use.” Alex Marette of ML Entry Gates of Shell Beach, Calif. agreed by say- ing, “I found the seminar to be very in- formative. It made me feel a lot more comfortable with future Sirit installs.” Toren concluded the seminar with a detailed account of how to program continued on page 66 = + PRODUCT SUPPORT ENCON ELECTRONICS Are you looking for a distributor that ou looking for a distributor that has expert techs, a huge inventory and exceptional customer service?
