play around town These Trails Were Made for Hiking Ah, summertime hikes. Warm air, blue skies and the smell of…the city? Oh yes. Whether you’re looking for a quick, peaceful stroll or a day-long adventure, fi nd a selection of trails to explore right in town If you’ve got 15 minutes... You don’t have to hike far to accomplish a lot. For east-siders, the mile long trail at Elvehjem Sanctuary in Elvehjem Park offers a relaxing hike. West-siders can take refuge in several green spaces including Hoyt Park and its little patch of forest or Stricker’s Pond just off Gammon Road, where you can hike a mile-long trail through wetlands. For a chance to glimpse a fl ower that only blooms until June, head to the Heritage Sanctuary on the east side in mid-May and you’ll arrive just in time to see the white petals of trillium fl owers open. If you’ve got an hour... With more time to spare, immerse your- self in a voyage through Owen Conser- vancy Park overlooking the west side or in the picturesque meadows of Middleton’s Pheasant Branch Conservancy. Just off the Beltline on the south side, you can also fi nd a three-mile trail in Turville Point Conservation Park, where you can listen to the calming sound of Lake Mendota and get a glimpse of blooming wildfl owers, the perfect antidote to workday stress. If you’ve got all day... When you’re yearning for an all-day excur- sion, the somewhat-wild expanse of land inside the UW Arboretum is an obvious pick. Take the day to roam the Arboretum’s miles of trails and you’ll fi nd plenty of op- portunities for bird watching or enjoying peace and quiet. For an even more rustic adventure, take a trek down the Ice Age Trail. A thousand mile-long trail snaking through Wisconsin, you can jump on from the southwest side of Madison and head either north or south as far as your feet can take you.
