38 Maritime Heritage Festival delights sailors and landlubbers of all ages THE PORT WASHINGTON Maritime Heritage Festival, Aug. 15-17, features the tall ship Peacemaker; Coast Guard vessels and harbor cruis- ers; restored and handcrafted wooden boats; edu- cational and historical maritime activities and dis- plays; guided, interactive harbor tours and the 4th Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta. Children's activities with a maritime focus include "Coastie," the Coast Guard robot, and water safety awareness demonstrations and exhibits. This free admission festival also boasts an artisans' market- place, live music and entertainment, plus a food and beverage court. Debuting this year is a Ferris wheel with sweeping views of the marina and lakefront. Also new for 2014 is the Land Regatta Run/Walk. (Proceeds benefit the safety railing at Coal Dock Park.) Ship tours of Peacemaker and other vessels, includ- ing the new U.S. Coast Guard rescue boat, will be available. Tour times are noon-6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $6 to tour all vessels and can be pur- chased in advance at portmaritimefestival.com Those inspired to enjoy an on-water experience can sail aboard the Lakeside Spirit, a 50 passenger excur- sion vessel that includes two levels – a lower, enclosed cabin with a full bar and open-air top level for outside viewing. The Lakeside Spirit's 45- minute harbor tour will depart every hour, begin- ning at 2 p.m. on Friday and at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Guides will tell the stories and history of Port Washington's beautiful harbor community and what lies beneath the water. Tickets are avail- able for purchase now at the festival's website. The festival location is downtown Port Washington's harbor at Coal Dock Park and Marina. Hours are noon-9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
