Ten Chimneys offers personal view of theaterʼs ʻGolden Ageʼ TENCHIMNEYS in Genesee Depot, 30minutes southwest ofMilwaukee,was the summer home of theater legendsAlfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. “Anyonewhowas anyone” in theatre, arts, and lit- erature visited here fromthe roaring 1920s through the 1940s. The estate, almost inevitably, became an important place for artistic creation, discussion, and inspira- tion. Ten Chimneys is overflowingwithmemora- bilia: notes fromLaurence Olivier, snapshots of the Luntswith the QueenMother,mementos from HelenHayes andNoël Coward, inscribed first edi- tion books fromEdna Ferber andAlexander Woollcott, and remembrances fromdozens of other intimates and luminaries. More than just the Lunts’ home, Ten Chimneyswas a home for the arts—literally andmetaphorically. Most of Ten Chimneys’ historic furnishings, hand- paintedmurals, personal décor, and diverse collec- tions are intact and unchanged – original pieces hand-picked by the Lunts in the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s.And themagic is undiminished.As guests are welcomed through the Lunts’ remarkable creation, they are surprised and thenmoved by countless details.
