playAround Town in Galena, Illinois Old meets new in a getaway just over the border Sunny skies, open roads, fresh air blowing into open windows: summers are made for road trips. And before this one passes you by, get away to a gem found just over the border in Galena, Ill. Tucked into the northwestern tip of our neighbor to the south, this former min- ing and shipping hub is only two hours from Madison, and far from the urban maze (and fast-paced attitude) of Th e Windy City. It's a little bit slower, a little bit quieter and a whole lot charming. But what else would you expect from a town that boasts an impressive 85 percent of its buildings included in a National Register of Historic Places. Th ere's no better place to experience Galena's past than on Main Street, where colorful awnings cast cool shadows over the sidewalks and brick buildings stand pressed together—just as they had a century ago. From a fully functioning 18th century blacksmith shop to the stately, preserved homes—including the home of Ulysses S. Grant just across the river—the town keeps the past alive for visitors to enjoy.
