H a m m e r s m i t h h a s many years of experience of managing frost on his family orchard and studied and apprenticed under Dr. Rafael Guarga, president of the University of Uruguay. The two collaborated on a new method of controlling cold airfl ows and draining cold air masses. The new book, published by WestBow Press, discusses the causes of frost and methods growers can use to protect their crops. The book is available in paperback and electronic versions from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Provide sells Hol sprayers P rovide Agro is partnering with Hol Spray Systems of Holland to sell HSS orchard sprayers in North America. Hol Spray Systems has developed airblast sprayers specifi cally for high-density orchards. They use a low- noise radial two-speed fan to draw clean air into the distribution, which sends air equally to all outlets. The overcapacity of the fan makes it possible to operate at lower PTO speeds, reducing fuel consumption and noise. Water rates can be varied based on the target pest, canopy density, and product being applied. Standard features include a clean-water tank for hand washing and a recirculating tank-rinsing system. For more information check the website www. provideag.ca. Organic herbicide approved W estbridge Agricultural Products has received approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its Suppress herbicide, which has also been approved by the Organic Materials Review Institute for use in organic food production. Suppress, which con- tains a blend of fatty acids, is a broad-spectrum contact herbicide for post-emergent, nonselective weed con- trol. It is designed to control weeds in cool and cloudy conditions, as well as warm, sunny weather. For more information, go to www.westbridge.com. CMI receives packaging award W enatchee, Washington-based Columbia Marketing International, a tree fruit grower-shipper-packer, received one of fi ve national awards for its creative Go-Go Fresh cherry package. The PMA Impact Award for Excellence in Packaging was presented at Produce Marketing Association's Fresh Summit held in October in Anaheim, California. CMI's award winning cherry pouch bag package, one of 67 entries, was the only fruit winner in the category. "With Go-Go Fresh snacking cherries, CMI created the fi rst single-serve cherry package designed specifi cally for the convenience store channel, CMI vice president of marketing Steve Lutz said in a news release. Convenience stores have been an untapped market for cherry producers because of their unique needs for smaller fi xed-weight, snacking type pack- ages rather than traditional, larger random weight bags used in supermarkets. Convenience store customers want on-the-go snack products that are healthy, says CMI's Katharine Grove. Before creating the cherry snack pouch, CMI's marketing team drew feedback from a focus panel of consumers and retailers.
