Starting a New Chapter
I
n the September/October issue on this page, the longtime editor of StateWays Richard
Brandes announced his retirement. I'm very grateful to Richie for the mentoring he's
provided over the last four years, which has prepared me to step into this new role and
attempt to fi ll his shoes.
My goal is to continue the stability and consistent quality he established and maintained
over the years as head of this magazine. There will certainly be changes, but you can expect
StateWays to continue its focus on providing the news, information, reviews and analysis that
control state personnel need to successfully serve their constituents.
I've been part of the Beverage Group at StateWays' parent company EPG Media &
Specialty Information since 2010, working as both a managing editor and digital editor on
this magazine and others in the group (I was even editor of StateWays for a few issues). I'm
familiar with the beverage alcohol industry and the concerns of control state personnel.
For this issue we're presenting the annual Control State Fiscal Review, and the results are
in: Gross sales once again increased nationwide. To see the full national results and state-by-
state charts, see page 18.
We were fortunate enough to interview retiring North Carolina chief administrator Mike
Herring for the fi rst StateWays Q&A. Herring will call it a career at the end of 2014 after
33 years working for the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission. Few, if
any, control state administrators can match Herring's breadth of experience, having risen
from a fi eld auditor in 1981 to chief administrator beginning in 1995.
In his nearly two decades of leadership since then, North Carolina's gross sales have
increased 144 percent, and he was a pioneer in tackling the challenge of adapting to the
rise of the internet and overall technology modernization. The full interview with Herring
begins on page 10.
I encourage all StateWays readers to stay in touch. Feel free to contact me anytime with
updates and photos about what's happening on the ground in your jurisdiction. You can reach
me at jnedelka@specialtyim.com or 203-855-8499 x213.
