The high point of any visit toWashington County is theHolyHillNational Shrine, a Roman Catholic basilica located near the town of Erin. Froma spire of the basilica, one of the highest points in SoutheasternWisconsin, visitors can see the hues of fall throughout thewooded hills. For golfers,Washington County is home to two of the best courses in the state – ErinHills and Washington County.And both courses offer out- standing views of the spires ofHolyHill. If a shower takes you inside, don'tmiss the acclaimedMuseumofWisconsinArt in the county seat ofWest Bend, the SchauerArt andActivities Center inHartford, Germantown's Sila Lydia Bast BellMuseumwith its collection ofmore than 5,000 bells orHartford'sWisconsinAutomotiveMuseum, the state's largest automuseum. Historical sites abound, beginningwith the Courthouse SquareMuseum& Jailhouse inWest Bend, considered amasterpiece of late 19th century architecture. The recently renovatedmuseumdis- plays exhibits on local business and early settlers. In Richfield, you'll find the RichfieldHistorical Park andHistorical Society,with an 1870s gristmill, restored housewhere themilling families lived, barn and smokehouse, all nestled among towering evergreens. WhileWashington County is a great side trip any time of year, here are some special October events worth considering: • Pumpkins and hayrides from10 a.m.-4 p.m. every Saturday in Jackson at Lammscapes (www.lammscape.com). •HolyHillArt & FarmMarket Oct. 15 & 16 two miles east of theHolyHill Basilica.
