Wooden FROM THE ARCHIVES GeoWorld magazine has built a reputation as a trusted source of information with consistently forward-looking and authorita- tive content. We were the first publication to address the needs of the GIS user community, and we have enjoyed much success as the industry "found its footing" and expanded into a wide range of disciplines. We feel lucky to have served a dedicated readership for more than two decades. The content of each GeoWorld issue has been posted online at www.geoplace.com since 1996. This rich resource provides perspective on technology development and clear relevance to the challenges faced today. To highlight some of the infor- mational resources available, each issue will feature archived stories relating to that issue's cover story. BY MATTHEW PIETRYSZYN AND GAEA OAKE September 2010 Transforming Web GIS: Brampton Integrates Microsoft Office SharePoint Server with the Enterprise By Matthew Pietryszyn and Gaea Oake March 2009 Send in the Clouds: Cloud Computing Accelerates Innovation while Reducing Cost and Complexity By Bob Lozano BY BOB LOZANO Clouds Send in the Cloud Computing Accelerates Innovation while Reducing Cost and Complexity F or the geospatial industry, this is a time to gain perspective, step back from the daily fray and consider what sort of fundamental, game- changing opportunities might be available. Put another way, today's geospatial leaders can benefit greatly by looking at their businesses from the same vantage point as the satellites on which they so often rely. Taking a few giant steps back, many leaders will find that they're often tasking talented algorithm engineers and developers to take on parallel and distributed computing; opening the door for a host of potential inefficiencies. Sensing an opportunity, leaders now are looking for a better way to help their developers focus on core competencies—to finally focus on what they're really good at: creating great algorithms. They know that doing so results in a less complex, more efficient and more agile working environment. G E O W O R L D / M A R C H 2 O O 9 In addition, these specialists can use all the tools in their arsenal effectively to develop applications in a more elegant, correct way—instead of the unnecessarily complex, inefficient ways of "days gone by." That's where leading geospatial companies are using cloud-computing technology to simplify the tasks at hand. Cloud computing can take on the complex, labor- intensive "computer science" problems, thereby freeing up developers to focus on their core competency and creating significant cost savings along the way. What's in a Cloud? Cloud computing is the evolution and convergence of familiar computing trends (e.g., utility and grid comput- ing, virtualization, SaaS, etc.) along with new elements introduced to deal with new levels of scale. These are combined into a dynamic new style of computing in which the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts.
