The Washington State Grape Society has a full lineup of topics to keep grape growers abreast of the latest viticulture research and regulations during its annual meeting, November 17-18 in Grandview. Keynote speakers Gina Nicholson, food safety and quality manager for The Kroger Company, Ohio, and Kris- tine Rogers of Portland's Kroger/Fred Meyer, will address food safety requirements and their impacts on the grape industry on Thursday morning in their talk "Selling Food Safety from the Top Down—A Grower and Consumer Responsibility." Nicholson is currently implementing wireless electronic temperature monitoring systems at Kroger stores and is developing a food safety and quality culture campaign to enhance food safety behavior of Kroger associates at all 2,500 stores. Other presentations during the two-day conference and trade show include an economic snapshot of Wash- ington's grape industry, a new Concord grape sustain - ability program, practical solutions for pesticide safety, techniques to maximize disease control, new and emerg- ing weeds, the impact of grapevine leafroll disease on production and quality, and the latest research on monitoring and controlling leafroll virus vectors.
