Typical Glencoe Village park surrounded by native bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) trees The unique pleasures of Glencoe include the immedi- ate access residents have to Lake Michigan, sandy beaches, preserved natural forests, a former railroad right-of-way bike trail, and a small lake in Skokie Lagoons. Glencoe has the third largest number of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes in the country, including the only known vehicular bridge designed by this world-famous architect. What are some points of pride? JH: Our forestry programs have evolved in a positive way over time and with the strong support over the past 32 years of five different Village managers and elected Village boards. We have a highly professional tree supervisor and crew as well. I am proud of the Village's adoption of its first tree ordi- nance, which has been revised two times to become one of the strictest in the Chicago area. This has been accom- panied by protection of private property trees during new construction and home additions as well as consistent field enforcement. Since 1994, I have administered a program requiring builders to pay for public parkway tree plantings at new construction and tear-down sites. www.urban-forestry.com Volunteer members of the Glencoe Friends of the Green Bay Trail take a lunch break from their hard work cutting invasive buckthorns on a segment of this bike/jogging trail. 11
