BOX 343 PERRY, OHIO 44081 TELEPHONE: (440) 259-3811 FAX: (440) 259-3338 1-800-860-8104 If a street tree begins to get into the CDPU wires, the Division of Power and Water dispatches one of their contracted tree crews to prune the encroaching limbs. Normally, Rice assigns the line clearance work each morning to Lead Foreperson Ron Lambert, a 40-year Asplundh veteran who has worked on the CDPU con- tract for 18 years and knows the system like the back of his hand. Ron and fellow Foreperson Reuben Green divide the assignments and hit the road with their lifts, chippers, saws, and climbing gear. If the work site war- rants it for public safety, the City arranges temporary parking bans and traffic control—even towing cars if necessary. "We allow the tree crews to monitor the City's dispatch- ing channel, so they usually know when there's an emer- gency. Ron will often call me to see if we need assis- tance," explains Rice. If an ice storm or thunderstorm creates an outage, the contracted tree crews respond alongside the City's line crews. They also participate in the City's "Neighborhood Pride" effort to target a spe- cific area for an all-out cleanup of power lines, street lights, and fire hydrants (remember, it's the Division of Power and Water). The goal is to improve reliability, pub- lic safety, and the citizens' pride in their surroundings. By making the most of each partner's capabilities and expertise, the City of Columbus enjoys a remarkably efficient and safe vegetation management program on their electrical system. www.urban-forestry.com DOUG YATES dyates@klynnurseries.com Call Doug to help determine your tree needs. • 1800 Species and Cultivars in Catalog • Excellent Reference and Information Guide • Diverse Tree Inventory klynnurseries.com Password: route84 User Name: klyn 15
