2011 SMA AWARDS, Presented at the Milwaukee Conference Banquet by Steve Cothrel, Awards Committee Chair HONORARY MEMBERSHIP For his pioneering work in urban tree canopy analysis, social ecology, and macrosystem biology, the Society awards honorary membership to Dr. J. Morgan Grove. Dr. Grove is a research sci- entist with the U.S. Forest Service's Northern Research Station in Baltimore, Maryland. His work has integrated traditional research methodology with cutting edge technology. His innovative research and publishing will continue to benefit the Society and the profes- sion of urban forestry for years to come. AWARD OF ACHIEVEMENT This professional works all over the world as a senior project man- ager for AMEC Earth & Environmental. His expertise in cost-benefit analysis, geospatial and GIS analysis, and green infrastructure planning is formidable. In recognition of his innovative urban tree canopy analysis accomplishments and his scholarly service to our profession, the SMA's Award of Achievement is presented to Ian Hanou. AWARD OF MERIT The Award of Merit is our organization's highest honor. This year's winner exemplifies both the personal qualities and the contribu- tions to SMA that are worthy of such recognition. Our honoree has been a member for many years, and has served multiple terms on the SMA Board. He also has been an active contributor to many committees, including Editorial Review, and he hosted one of our most memorable conferences. In recent years he has been a key member of the MFI faculty cadre. Finally, we doubt there is anyone who has traveled more miles to be a perennial part of SMA events. He is the pride of Surrey, British Columbia: Owen Croy. LIFE MEMBERSHIP Life Membership is conferred upon members who have demon- strated a lifetime of leadership and support for the SMA and its mission. This year's honoree has been a leader within SMA since before some of you were born. He is a past board member, a past president, and a conference host. Since retiring as a city forester, he has become one of the leading consultants in his area while continuing to actively serve our organization. He is now retiring again, from his long-time role as the SMA's representative on the ISA Research and Science Committee—a position he filled admi- rably. Please thank this year's Life Membership recipient from the great State of Michigan, Bob Cool. AUTHOR'S CITATION The SMA Awards Committee and Executive Board have the oppor- tunity to recognize people's unique contributions to the SMA with 32 special awards. This year's honoree has contributed many erudite essays via the SMA Listserve and has authored numerous informa- tive stories over the years for City Trees magazine. He continues to share and solicit information as our representative to the ANSI committee. Hailing from California, the winner of our 2011 Author's Citation Award is Gordon Mann. PIONEERS OF THE SMA AWARD Although he has been retired now for years, his contributions during the early years of the SMA played a key role in the devel- opment of our Society, and helped us become the broad, diverse, and effective group that we are today. With great pleasure, we recognize past president and pioneer of the SMA, Wisconsin's own Dick Meyer. PRESIDENT'S AWARD OF APPRECIATION Doug Still: "I'd like to honor one of our past presidents who has been a great colleague and friend for years. This year he agreed to serve as the chair of our newly reformatted SMA Past Presidents Committee, a group with some ambitious goals over the next few years. In appreciation for all of his work with this committee and for the Society in general, I'd like to present this award to the esteemed gentleman from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Gene Hyde." CONFERENCE HOST It takes more than a year of hard work and lots of dedication to put together an SMA conference. Although it's a team effort, one person every year must volunteer to take ultimate responsibility for putting together the complex and dynamic event known as our annual conference. This year's host assembled a talented team and came close to achieving the impossible, pleasing everyone. We are truly appreciative of all the time and toil that this year's host and conference committee chair has invested in our Society and our conference, and we recognize one of the City of Milwaukee's finest representatives, David Sivyer. PRESIDENTIAL APPRECIATION AWARD Serving as SMA President is a huge commitment as well as a tre- mendous honor. It takes years of work on committees and on the board before a person is experienced enough to serve as presi- dent. Just as importantly, it takes a selfless, dedicated, and skilled leader to be effective in this role. We have been blessed with just such a man for the past year, and on behalf of our entire Society, we presented a plaque expressing our appreciation to outgoing president Doug Still. Congrat's to all the SMA Award recipients! City Trees
