CORBU TO GO Before founding his eponymous architecture firm in 2006, Jacob Brillhart went on an architectural walkabout, tracing the path of Le Corbusier's drawing tours for three months and then documenting the same destinations in his sketchbook. Ten years later, Brillhart's explorations are showing their fruit, with a slate of projects from Miami to Malaga, not the least of which is the recent completion of his home in Miami, seen here. Inspired? You can pick up "Voyage Le Corbusier," a travel sketchbook produced by Brillhart that will be published by W.W. Norton & Co. later this year. CULTURED 79 KIRIA KOULA opened its doors on a gritty block of San Francisco's Mission District last November with a show by artists José León Cerrillo and Ilja Karilampi and a bookstore focused on the research and interests of artist Paul Chan. As the first crowd of bespectacled and bearded gallery-goers poured into the space, Chan was announced as the Hugo Boss Prize winner and Cerrillo was invited to show at the New Museum Triennial. Not a bad start for a gallery founded by two novices. "We came to San Francisco with the intention of creating a contemporary visual art project that in some way was connected to a literary practice," says Leticia Vilalta, who co-owns the gallery with Rodrigo Peñafiel. "We wanted to rethink and recreate a traditional gallery space and create a conversation between the visual arts and literature." To help oversee their vision, the pair hired gallery director and curator Juana Berrio, whose "curatorial experience and knowledge made her perfect for Kiria Koula," says Vilalta. "Juana was an integral part of creating the format; she developed a specific structure for the program, which created an identity for the gallery." kiriakoula.com 19 18 Installation view from Kiria Koula's inaugural exhibition with works by José León Cerrillo and Ilja Karilampi.
