Beautiful split rail fence brings touch
of history to Virginia countryside
An unusual combination of board fence and split rail "snake" or "zig zag" fence contributes to the picturesque beauty of this farm in Appomattox, Virginia. Snake
rail is a type of fence constructed out of timber logs, usually split lengthwise into rails and typically used for agricultural or decorative fencing. Such fences require
much more timber than other types of wood fences, and so are generally only common in areas where wood is abundant. Interestingly, during the American Civil
War, split rail fences were a major source of fi rewood for both the Union and Confederate armies. (© fotosearch.com)
