WELCOME NOTE Welcome to Cultured. With quite a few more galleries than last year—including seven first-timers—lots of burgeoning new design talent and more coun- tries than ever represented, this year's Design Miami/ is proving to be at an all-time prime. This issue of Cultured, our third, has set out to capture all of that talent, craft and creativity and offer fairgoers another dimension of design discovery. Ditte Hammerstrøm, a Danish designer with a fresh take and a delicate eye, will show her Out of Focus chair, which graces our cover, at Gallery Maria Wettergren—one of the new galleries at Design Miami/. Architectural powerhouse David Adjaye, recipient of this year's prestigious Designer of the Year award, sits downs in his new London studio with writer Beatrice Galilee for an intimate interview proving he is as provocative and challenging as his work. Don't miss Adjaye's talk with Design Talks moderator Ste- fano Tonchi this week. In "New & Now" we take a look at the robust Design On/Site galleries and get a beat on the South African design scene through Design Miami/ first-timer Southern Guild, who is showing Gregor Jenkin's new collection. Closer to home we explore an emerging trend—collectable jewelry—as contributor Rachel Wolff uncovers an increasing number of collectors who view jewelry with the same regard as design or art. Naturally, there are several galleries ready to meet the demand. Writer Linda O'Keeffe digs deep to find several pieces with intriguing pasts in our "Past as Prologue" round up, including a Wendell Castle library. We also explore the larger design dialogue within major institutions around the world. Miami-based Tom Austin tracks down which important design pieces are being shown in various museums, and who is acquiring what pieces. Lastly, in Cultured's "Top 25," we edit the endless offerings Top: Sarah Harrelson and Thom Collins, Director of MAM; at left: Carlos and Lori Suarez. during this marathon week, and hope that you can at least read about what you might not have time to attend.
