Khristian Bombeck, the inventor of one of the machines reviewed, challenged him to put that claim to the test. The result was a duel, Bombeck and his invention, a four-vessel siphon brewer called the "Steampunk," versus a single-cup pour-over station manned by Cho, a for- mer board of directors member for both the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) and World Barista Championship and currently a specialist at Wrecking Ball Coffee Roasters in San Francisco. The winner was a surprise to many. Machine over man Bombeck and Cho met in a small warehouse run by LAMILL Coffee, a roaster and distributor based in Alhambra, a city in Los Angeles' sprawling eastern suburbs. Joining them were three judges: Ted Lingle, founding member and former ex- ecutive director of 15 years for the SCAA; Ricardo Pereira, a Q grader, Brewers Cup judge and specialty coffee manager at Ally Coffee in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and Lynsey Brew Duel C Peter Surowski EQUIPMENT NEWS The competition was well attended.
