CaribouInspires.com Big Bet on Blue Bottle The bicoastal roaster café, Blue Bottle Coffee, recently announced receiving a second round of $25.75 million in venture capital from a group advised by Morgan Stanley Investment Manage- ment. Several major players in the San Francisco venture scene are behind the funding. Joining Google Ventures, Index Ventures, and True Ventures as backers are one of Instagram's co-founders, and Twitter co-founder Evan Williams. Much of the money will be spent on research and development, including developing sustainable packaging and releasing a bottled iced coffee intended to be "the equal of the iced coffee we sell in our shops." Blue Bottle now has 11 cafes in the Bay Area and New York City with plans to open five more. Learn more: www.bluebottlecoffee.com Concord Expansion Underway S&D Coffee & Tea, the largest custom roaster in the United States, announced its plans to expand its facilities back in November of 2012. According to Scott Seebold, director of engineering and technical services for S&D Coffee & Tea, the first phase involving grading the site was going well in an announcement made December of 2013. The company is lowering the soil level by four feet to prepare for setting up loading docks. "If the weather continues to cooper- ate we hope to complete the work in time for operations to begin in August 2014," he said. S&D currently supplies coffee and tea to McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, Krispie Kreme, and to the U.S. military. The company operates 38 warehouses and distributions centers. Plans are in the works to introduce McDonalds McCafe ground coffee in grocery stores this spring.
