24 STiR tea & coffee industry international The meeting takes place every two years and attracts more than 400 scientists and specialists from all over the world, besides the domestic scientific community interested in topics such as coffee and health, agronomy and sustainability, among others. This year's event is organized by the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC). The focus is challenges faced by the coffee industry and offers a great opportunity for innovation. The program includes conferences, lectures and presentations on agronomy, coffee consumption and human health, chemistry and technology, among other relevant topics. During the 2014 ASIC Conference, several awards sponsored by leading companies of the industry will be granted for the first time. The 2014 Java Jog Grant Committee will review grant applications in July from organizations working in the region. The committee members are: Charlene Farmer, board member Food4Farmers; Craig Holt, Atlas Coffee; Marjoleine Motz, Fair & Sustainable Consulting; Nate Schaffran, Root Capital; and George Watane, 4C Association. Java Jog expects fund to be disbursed for use in early August, with brief impact reports to be submitted every two months. The inaugural use of ISSpresso is scheduled for the Futura Mission to the ISS on November 23, 2014, where European Space Agency Air Force Captain, Samantha Cristoforetti, will be the first Italian woman to enter space and the first astronaut in history to drink espresso while in orbit. Learn more: www.argotec.it/argotec Colombian coffee plantation Runners from inaugural SCAE Java Jog in Rimini, Italy Italy Making Espresso in Space During the past 13 years, Italian astro- nauts at the International Space Station (ISS) remarked that the thing they miss most while aboard is espresso coffee. Lavazza and Argotec, in conjunction with the Italian Space Agency (ASI), recently announced the launch of ISSpresso, the first capsule-based espresso system specifically designed to work in space, bringing Lavazza's authentic Italian coffee to space. The principles of fluid dynamics differ in space from those on Earth making the mundane processes brewing of tea, coffee and espresso a challenge. The ISSpresso takes its name from the ISS and was created by Argotec, the Italian engineering company specializing in aerospace system designs. The company also develops foods for in-space consumption with Italian coffee brand Lavazza. The machine will deliver United States Miguel Zamora Moving On Miguel Zamora, director of coffee, innovation and producer relations at Fair Trade USA, has left his position super- vising a coffee innovation pilot projects he has worked on since 2012. On the timing of his departure, Zamora said, "I wanted to finish this project, see the results, share results with people. I've been there for nine years or so and it's been great." He has been involved in agriculture for almost 20 years focusing on the creation of more sustainable supply chains and better opportunities for sustainable trade between farmers and workers. He is currently a member of the Specialty Coffee Association of Ameri- ca's Sustainability Council, and a board member of Food 4 Farmers. Zamora has launched a consultancy, Coffee Gente LLC , to support NGO's, farmers and coffee companies to create more sustainable supply chains. "FTUSA will be one of my first clients for some specific work it is trying to do to include with independent smallholder coffee farmers in Colom- bia," he said. Learn more: http://coffeegente.com/ Space station coffee maker, ISSpresso Republic of Congo Java Jog Fundraisers The second annual Java Jog, a fundraiser for coffee women in the Democratic Republic of Congo, took place in association with the annual convention for the Specialty Coffee Association of America, held this year in Seattle, Wash. Donations continued to come in even after the show was over with top fundraisers, so far, being Elizabeth Goldblatt of Six Degrees Coffee, and Willem Boot of Boot Coffee. An
